Realizing Superior possesses unique characteristics that need to be leveraged in order to create a competitive advantage, a concerted effort from three entities united as one and formed a new council - the CEC (Chamber - Economic Development - City). Two representatives from each entity serve on the CEC council and are committed to the mission: Recruit and retain quality, viable business to the Superior area.

Ideally located "In the Middle of Everywhere"-- only 22 miles west of U.S. Highway 81, 60 miles south of Nebraska Interstate 80 and 90 miles north of Kansas Interstate 70.

Economic Activities

Basic economic activities in Superior include farming, cattle feeding, manufacturing, and wholesale and retail sales. Superior 's major employers include banking, medical care, auto sales and service, secretarial service, food service and education.

The primary crops grown in the area are corn, wheat, soybeans and grain sorghum (milo). Food grade milo, a type designed for human consumption, is now grown in Nuckolls county. Many other farmers are exploring alternative crops.

Located in a diversified crop production area, Superior offers a 165 day growing season, irrigated agricultural production in a five county area (Webster, Nuckolls, Thayer - NE; Jewell and Republic - KS). 1,127 million acres of grains, soybean and alfalfa are produced.

In 1999, Superior received a $300,000 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) which helped make the community disaster resistant.

LB840

Superior passed LB840 a municipal sales tax increase that earmarks funds for economic development - a MUST for rural survival! In December of 2003, voters extended Superior's 1% sales tax for another 15 years confirming and supporting visionary leadership with a progressive attitude.

Business Incentive Program

Superior's business incentive program provides credits to qualifying business based upon jobs created and capital investment. These funds may be used to obtain and pay for city services, utilities and/or land owned by the city to create a new business or expand an existing business.

Utility Deposit Guarantee

The utility deposit guarantee program was established to provide assistance to new business owners by off-setting one of the startup costs when opening a business in Superior.

Note: All of the above programs terminate upon the expiration of LB840 funds, as well as, contingent on the availability of funds.

Rail

The city of Superior is served by Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) and also the Union Pacific Railroad. The Union Pacific Railroad operates 1 to 3 freight trains weekly serving Agrex, Inc.

Airport

The Superior Municipal Airport, two miles from Superior, has a 3,700 foot paved runway and a 3,100 foot sod runway both of which are lighted. The airport hosts several business charters each month and can accommodate corporate aircraft. The nearest point of scheduled air service is located at Grand Island, 90 minutes northwest of Superior.

Currently, the 3,700 foot concrete runway routinely accommodates light turbo-prop class aircraft. A major facilities upgrade will begin in the spring of 2005. A new concrete aircraft parking ramp and a widened concrete main taxiway will increase the airport's ability to accommodate heavier business aircraft. Future improvements are planned including improved runway lighting and eventually increasing the runway length to 4,200 feet.

A courtesy car is available free of charge for those who need transportation to Superior or the surrounding area.

Trucklines

There are over a dozen intra/interstate trucklines serving Superior. Load limits on Highway 8 and 14, as well as on the Truck Route which runs through Superior, are 80,000 pounds.

Utilities

Superior utilities operates as a municipally owned distribution system.

Natural gas is distributed in the community with a 6" gas line from Southern Star Central Gas Pipeline Company.

The municipal water system is supplied by nine wells which have an average depth of 84 feet and a maximum capacity of 5,280,800 gallons per day. The average daily demand is 519,000 gallons with hardness at 256 milligrams/liter.

Superior has a municipal sanitary sewage system and storm sewer system. The anerobic digester treatment plant has a daily capacity of 350,000 gallons.

Labor Supply

A recent Labor Supply Factors and Labor Availability Report for the Superior (Nuckolls County Area) indicates that the county and the Superior labor area are able to provide a significant number of dedicated and skilled workers to meet the needs of additional employers in the area. It is anticipated that if attractive working conditions with competitive wages and employee benefits were offered, a prospective new employer would be able to select their workforce from a substantial pool of qualified applicants.
